Brief background of the Project
The Project is based on the research of Professor J.
R. Garrott, which was carried out between 1988 and
1999 in a number of Asian countries (China, Taiwan, Japan, Macao, Singapore,
Hong Kong and India). For the purposes of research the instrument
(Chinese Values Survey) was used. It was developed in 1987 for the Chinese sociologists,
and was tested on rather small samples in 22 countries of the world,
not uncluding China. In 1988-89 the given instrument was adapted for China and
extended by demographic parameters for the purposes of Prof. J.R. Garrott's
doctoral research (Cultural Values Survey - CVS-origin)
and then it was used in other Asian countries.
In 1999, having received Dr. J.R. Garrott's permission for the CVS-origin
use for the research in the Foreign Languages Department, (nowadays Linguistic
Institute of Rostov State Pedagogical University), IL RSPU became interested
in the development of this Project.
Interest in the Project can be attibuted to:
-
Opportunity of adaptation to the Internet and Intranet use
-
Presence of comparative intercultural aspects
-
Prospect of the interdisciplinary approach to the research
-
Opportunity of a new joint approbation of the CVS-origin for English speaking
communities world wide and its located version in Russia
From the beginning of 2000 the CVS-origin was
used as one of the elements in training students of RSPU and Western
Kentucky University (WKU). The CVS-origin is adapted for use in a LAN
(database in MS Excel, the CVS-test in Visual Basic). However, in Moscow
(34 students) and Kursk (37 students), Russia and Denver, Colorado, USA
(25 students), the CVS-origin was used in a printed form with transfer
of the results by ordinary mail for formation of a CVS's database.
19 individuals from USA responded the CVS via e-mail.
For training purposes the CVS was distributed in classes and used
in various academic exercises during the course of study
(mini-projects and virtual classes). The CVS
was used in the courses "Elements of Computer Linguistics" (75 students,
English Language Department, RSPU, Dr.
I. Rozina), "Computer-mediated Communication" (7 students, Department
of Communication, WKU, Dr.
J. Downing), "English as a Second Language" (55 students, Department
of English, WKU, Prof.
R. Eckard).
In May 2000 the project was supported by Consortium for Humanities and
Social Sciences (IREX)
within the framework of the Information
Resources and Dissimination Program (¹
CARN-WEB-RU-I-9). The project is adapted for use in the Internet
and Russia. The CVS-origin was adapted, expanded by new demographic parameters
(CVS, English version) and located (CVS,
Russian version) for Internet, world wide and Russia wide research.
The Web-site includes:
The project is in progress and open for all interested in joint research on
any related aspects of Cultural Values. We encourage teachers with group
of students to participate in mini-projects
(virtual classes), which rely on e-mail and are formed so as to begin work at the start of each
new term. As well, we invite individuals to participate as a Project
Research Group Associate (virtual research communities) or respond
to the CVS individually.
